This has become what is known as a "hijacked" thread but the original question
was a serious one, and I am ashamed if I was one of the hijackers. I will give
my understanding of what I have been told about sleep cycles and then say
something psychological about cows.

Most of the sleep cycle diagrams I have seen and sleep cycle descriptions I
have read indicate that we go up into REM sleep from stage 4 sleep through
progressively more shallow stages of sleep, although these are somewhat shorter
in duration than the stages that are seen as we fall into deeper sleep. I do
not claim to be a sleep expert, though.

Ah, other people who think cows predict something. I have it on the
authority of a man who grew up on a dairy in Iowa that cows lie down
when they are moving food from one stomach to another - they have four.

Sandra Price, who sees cows up and down in France and Switzerland almost
daily.
