This has become what is known as a "hijacked" thread but the original question was a serious one, and I am ashamed if I was one of the hijackers. I will give my understanding of what I have been told about sleep cycles and then say something psychological about cows.
Most of the sleep cycle diagrams I have seen and sleep cycle descriptions I have read indicate that we go up into REM sleep from stage 4 sleep through progressively more shallow stages of sleep, although these are somewhat shorter in duration than the stages that are seen as we fall into deeper sleep.
