I'm with you Martin. I have them write four short practice papers (two pages each) to get familiar with APA style. Their final group paper is a full APA manuscript. I expect it to be of sufficient quality that it could be sent to a journal editor for consideration. Not every research group meets that challenge, but many do. The students all tell me after the course that 1. It was the hardest thing they ever did and 2. It made all of their subsequent psych courses easy.
