In trying to explain puppy-duck mounting behavior we could acknowledge one
aspect of instinct theory and that is perseveration.Accordingly, when an
instinct is initiated
the behavior pattern will continue until it has run out of energy. For eample a
cat may scratch a dirt area but if that dirt area is replaced with a wooden
area the scratch will continue on the wooden area.I suspect lots of the alleged
gay behavior in animals could be construed as instinctive patterns
perseverating on displaced objects.
Hence the puppy behavior could be viewed as displaced perseverative behavior on
a reinforcing duck.
