Annette asked: I'm curious: Do any of you on this listserve teach the Ainsworth studies in any depth/breadth? In intro? In dev psych? I think the problem may have to do with the 1-semester/quarter format for most college intro psych courses prohibiting such in-depth analysis.
We have the luxury of taking a year to teach the introductory course so we do describe Ainsworth's work in some depth in that course (typically one class meeting). I devote at least a week of my developmental course to describing that work along with some of the criticisms. (My interpretation of the strange situation is that it essentially measures a secure base phenomenon along with the temperament of the two members of the dyad and cultural expectations of the caregiver.) By the end of that course I try to leave students with at least a little skepticism about the whole attachment industry.
