American national mythology holds that the United States was 
"originally" populated mostly by immigrants from Great Britain. But 
historians often point out that the plurality language at the time of 
the Revolution was actually German. It turns out that Americans are 
*still* mostly German. Here's a map of the entire nation giving the 
largest ethnic ancestry in each county. The pale blue is German.

Fascinating stuff! Note also the small map at the top of the image, 
which does the same thing state by state. Fully 23(!) states have German 
as the largest ethnic ancestry. (And I suspect there would be more if 
the ancestry of the "Americans" in WV, KY, AR, and TN.)
