OK, this is going to be a bit Sylvestrian (meaning I don't have
references at hand so I'm winging it), but the enteric nervous system is
widely considered a third nervous system and is actually quite
extensive. I've heard, for example (again, I don't have the reference
handy) that you have more dopamine in your colon than in your brain. If
I get time, I will see if I can scare up some sources. I think the
author of the article was taking poetic license.
