So taking together the responses for the alienist--the criminally insane were alienated from society. Got it.
I have read Carr's book and agree it was a good read--although a bit more fictional than I would have like ;) Keeping it more true to the characters of the major players in psychology rather than some of the popular myths would have made me happier to use it as a course reading.
