I recall a thoughtful critique of the effect of organizations such as
PETA on research involving animals written by David Hubel in the early
1980s. I wish I could recall the reference now . . . (sorry). If anyone
else recalls this, I'd love to be able to track it down again!

Subject: [tips] animal rights organizations?

After learning about PETA and student and faculty membership in such
organizations on our campus, I was wondering if tipsters know of any
animal rights groups that may actually be sensible and less prone to
promoting terrorism? As you may recall, I mentioned that PETA is
attacking our psych and biology departments. Apparently, they may
actually just be after publicity or recruitment of new devotees. I
naively assumed rational dialogue might be an aim. Ha! But then I used
to think rational argument was an element of real debates. Ha! Hence,
I am wondering if there are alternate groups that might take more
reasonable stands regarding animal and human welfare issues. The only
pets I am allowed are two beta fish so I am certainly out of the loop
when it comes to such issues. I am home today trying to avoid class
work....I think I have come up to the limit of my three posts for the
day...so of course I vote now that we be allowed five posts. I was
always told to vote early and often. Gary
