Isn't most education subsidized by the government? If so, then students 
actually only pay part of the salary.
 
I don't think anyone claimed student evaluations do not matter, only that they 
should not be considered the whole picture. As a simple example, what about the 
other two "pillars" of professorship that the students never see?
