The link in the article is incorrect. They meant to use the following link:
http://journalism.missouri.edu/undergraduate/web-media-player.html So University of Missouri School of Journalism is still in the running for Mike's "Top Ten Stupidest Things A University Has Decided To Do". However, they do give their reasons at the link above and they don't require the iPhone. So the headline is technically incorrect. They strongly suggest the iTouch and they do require an Audio-Visual Web Media player and they say the iTouch has everything you will need and they don't believe any of the competitors do. The iPhone will also meet the requirements but the phone capability is not required. Students will electronically |download such material to either of those devices from iTunes |University, a no-cost component of the iTunes Store." If this is true, it has to rank in the Top Ten Stupidest Things A University Has Decided To Do". I say "if this is true" because the link in the article that is supposed to go to the Missouri U SoJ does go there but links to a page with the following: |Student Wireless Laptop Requirements Beginning Fall 2005 | |Missouri School of Journalism undergraduate and graduate |students who began their studies at MU after the Fall Semester 2005 |are required to have wireless laptop computers. To meet this requirement: | |Each year, the school recommends two or three configurations |for all entering freshmen and graduate students. The minimum |recommended configuration is a wireless laptop computer with |the Microsoft Office suite of software. | |Additional software may be required in some specialties by the |time students reach the junior year or in specific graduate areas |of emphasis. Photojournalism majors, for example, will need to |purchase Photoshop, a program for toning photographs for publication. | |Students are encouraged to acquire wireless laptop technology |from Apple, which the School has designated as its preferred |provider, but students also will have a choice of a Windows-based |alternative. Last year, 99.5 percent of incoming students chose |the Apple option. | |The base-level student computer configuration, including software, |will cost $1,400 or less. More expensive models with more features |will be available for those students who desire additional software |and technological capabilities. | |Students will be given financing options to amortize the cost over |four semesters through TigerTech at University Bookstore, Brady |Commons. Students with documented need (as determined through |the FAFSA filing process) may include the cost in financial aid packages. http://www.journalism.missouri.edu/undergraduate/computer-requirements.html The last date for updating the above site is May 11, 2009. So, is the iPhone requires a spoof or has someone really lost their mind in Missouri? -Mike Palij New York University [email protected] --- To make changes to your subscription contact: Bill Southerly ([email protected]) --- To make changes to your subscription contact: Bill Southerly ([email protected])
