Perhaps, but oft repeated by Berliners to Americans as well.  That is where I first learned of the translation snafu.

As an aside, if you are ever in Berlin, there are many amazing sites to see both historic and current.  For the animal lovers and architectural aficionados on the list, the Berlin Zoo is well worth the trip.
