My experiences is two-fold. First, I have found that very few students take
advantage of such open sessions. Even when I have my TA in a specific class
offer walk-in help the night before a paper is due only a couple of students
show up. Second, when students want a tutor ("I'm struggling in this class and
need tutoring") they often have very unrealistic expectations about what
tutoring involves. Often they think that the tutoring session should take the
place of their studying time (that is, they stop studying and just go to the
tutoring), that the tutor should re-teach everything in the class or the text,
or that the tutor should do/correct their homework. So both tutors and students
using them need to be educated about what the purpose is of tutoring, whey they
can expect, etc. Perhaps sign a contract if it is a an ongoing tutoring
relationship.

Subject: [tips] experience with/advice for walk-in tutoring?

Hi folks- my department is starting a walk-in tutoring service and I'm seeking
advice/suggestions. One night a week we've reserved a lounge in a dorm for a
couple hours and employed a few of our outstanding students to be there for
walk-in help with a course or feedback on writing (the university has a
tutoring service that is well used by out students so this would be a
substitute or supplement to that).

Have any of you tried something similar? How did it work out? Tips or
suggestions?

Many thanks,

Patrick
