Recently I have moved away from covering all the material I think the
students should learn. Like many of you I have added a critical thinking
component to my class (I use Levy, 1997 Tools of Critical Thinking) and use
the rest of my class time to cover material that, hopefully, will excite the
students about psychology. When I cover neural transmission it is in the
context of the effect of psychoactive drugs. I use ESP to frame the
discussion of methodology and perception. I still test the students on the
same material but expect that they are responsible for learning the
material. I have found that the students are doing better on the exams.
