I've seen several versions of ELIZA on the web, some of which are in java.
Some do a better job than others. I can't seem to find my list of ELIZA
sites, but here are a few I found from a simple web search:

I know there are some other sites around as well since none of these were
the one I was originally thinking of. Also, 'bots' are being used for a
variety of backend functions now, especially for determining things like
"other sites of interest" based on your browsing patterns, other books of
interest based on what books you buy, music choices, etc., etc.
