Read this month's _Scientific American_. In it, there is an article by Gerd
Kempermann and Fred Gage on recent work concerning the finding that adult
human brains can grow new neurons. There are many, many questions still to be
answered, but the research done to date seems compelling (at least to this
neophyte who has lost way too many brain cells over the years).

See: "New nerve cells for the adult brain" Vol. 280. No. 5, pp 48-55, and
references therin.
