I anxiously await others' input!
I thought I'd go ahead and send my reply to the list.
Up until now I have used a different statement in different classes
but starting in the fall I will no longer do so based on recent events.
I had previously given a much more elaborate and strong statement
in my lower division classes where I assumed students could be more
'ignorant' of the concept. With upper division classes I had used a
briefer statement.
Given that I am now finding more cheating among the upper division
classes I will include the more detailed statement in all of my
classes--primarily because I need as much 'evidence' as possible
when submitting a claim to the academic integrity committee!
This is my lower division class statement:
Cheating will not be tolerated in any form, and there are many! -- copying
homework, using someone else's 'outside experience' or making one up that
never existed, not fulfilling service hours honestly, taking answers
off another person's exam, paraphrasing someone else's research report,
studying previous exams or using previous papers on file in fraternities
and sororities that were not meant to be circulated, taking another
person's words or ideas and making them seem to be your own in the papers
you hand in, etc.
IMHO, most people do not cheat to please themselves--we know who and what
we are all about--cheating is usually done to please someone else. If you
feel compelled to cheat, please go see someone in the counseling
center--a service you pay for anyway, whether you use it or not--they will
help you figure out whom it is you are needing to please at such as
extreme.
If I think you have cheated I am obligated to hand over all evidence to a
jury panel of faculty. They examine the evidence and decide on
consequences. In the past their decisions have been very severe, typically
an F in the course for just one assignment copied out. If you feel
pressured by outside circumstances, or because you don't understand how to
write something, come see me. It is better to lose a few points for a late
paper than all points for the semester!
Here is the whimpier, upper division statement:
Cheating will not be tolerated in any form and there are MANY! I will be
attentive to all forms and have made some efforts to minimize your need to
cheat (see below for exam note cards). I cannot control all forms of
cheating and must rely on your integrity. If you feel compelled
to cheat please see someone in the counseling center to see whom
it is you are trying to please--we don't cheat to please ourselves.
