It was not required. I simply told them to do so. This is a hard
thing semantically. If I stand in front of the class and I tell them, "I
have made readily available for you a link to a website that discusses
authorship in the sense of the fine distinctions between citation and
quotation and plagiarism. I want you to check it out before you hand
in your papers."

Is that a "requirement"???? If it was my kids at home and I made such
a "suggestion" they would see it as a "requirement" but I am not at
home with my kids.

I bet we all do some things like this.
It is a pain in the behind to always be so very careful about what
we say. This is almost worse than worrying about being PC, which
I seldom do anymore anyway.
