Two situations in my class, would appreciate input/reactions:
1. First day of class, after class a student approached me and explained
he would be out of town the day of the final exam, could he arrange to take
it another day/time. We agreed to do it the day before, which is the last
day of class, after class. I didn't ask why he would be out of town.
2. Yesterday, student approached me and explained that she would be
missing class for the rest of the semester (approx week and a half) and the
final also due to a new temp agency assignment of 2 weeks duration
requiring M-F 9-5 work. Said she had arranged to get notes from other
students (attendance is not graded or mandatory) but wanted to reschedule
the final exam. I asked her to try to arrange with her new employer so she
could take the final at the regular day/time. We left it open, she would
get back to me after discussing with new employer.
Are the two situations different? I was irked with the second one because
the student should be arranging job around class, not the other way around,
but the final exam schedule was also available to the first student when he
signed up for the class (although not all instructors give finals, he
couldn't know that until he saw the syllabus).
I empathize with students who must work while they obtain a degree but it
can get very frustrating esp. in a school like UH where many (probably
most) students are working. Erica
