I usually sacrifice class time to hand out assignments and midterm exams.
It's one of the best ways I use to get to know names. I usually know about
75% of my students' by name (in classes of about 50-70) after handing back
5 assignments and two midterms in a four month course.

In larger classes (of about 150) I would arrive early to class and lay out
the assignments by surname on the front row of seats (in about 15-20
piles, with A-C, D-F, etc. written on pages taped behind the piles), and
have students pick them up as they arrive at class. I avoid putting grades
on the front page to preserve privacy.
