Hi Jeannine,

I don't know if this is the book your thinking of (it's on the
new side), but I have a copy of Julian Meltzoff's "Critical 
Thinking About Research: Psychology & Related Fields" 
(APA, 1997), and the last section of the book features
16 "practice articles" with critiques.  It looks like it could
be useful.
