In the past ten years, I have only had one strong challenge to teaching
evolution. On the other hand, I have had many students state that they don't
"believe in" evolution. I use this reaction as a way to introduce the
distinction between faith-based and evidence-based beliefs (which, in a post
several months ago, I argued was not always a clear-cut distinction). I then
make the point that the goal of scientists is to gather enough evidence to
convince others, not just themselves.

P.S. Lately, I feel that I am devolving. Probably I will emerge again from
prehuman status sometime after finals are over.
