Title: Re: Cheating & Culture
Interesting post, and I have to admit that the fact that the
cheaters were Russian surprised me. I have had about a
dozen Russian students, some good, some bad, but none
involved in cheating. I'm a pretty suspicious person by
nature - always look around a student who gets good
grades (compare to those around him/her, watch extra
carefully for cheat sheets, etc.) - and have never had a
problem.
Sans doute we were mostly thinking it might be one of
our favorite PC groups. And I couldn't help but think of
Allport's studies.
Bill Bradley's quote is particularly apt:
"I was stunned by the verdict. It shows that racial
profiling seeps so deeply in our society that a wallet
in the hand of a white man looks like a wallet and a
wallet in the hand of a black man looks like a gun."
I was so impressed by this that I hope TIPSters will
forgive me if I offer it in a separate post, in case
those who weren't interested in the "Cheating and
Culture" thread might miss it.
