Back in my stereotaxic surgery days, we had a special adapter that we first
fit into their ears (it looked a little like headphones).  The adapter was
less pointed and thus did not cause the damage that the ear bars on the
sterotaxic device itself caused.  I'm sure that a catalog that contains a
range of stereotaxic equipment would have these for sale.

Certainly, the damage to the ears should be prevented to not only help protect
the animal from unnecessary pain and discomfort but also the damage to the
ears could serve as a potential confound.
