What is measured by a grade depends on the quality of the
evaluations and the person who constructed them. Tests play a
substantial role in grades, and rightly so. Obviously, tests can
measure learning and retention of information quite well, and can
also measure numerous cognitive and affective qualities that many
teachers try to impart (e.g., problem-solving, ability to take
different perspectives, writing skills, ...).

I'm not sure in what sense you are using the words academic
success. I suspect that getting good grades, passing, not
dropping out of school, and the like all seem pretty directly
linked to academic success in most people's minds.

Best wishes
Jim
