I have not seen the HBO of Temple Grandin but I heard her interview on NPR.I
was very impressed with her analysis of autism and the comparisons she made to
animals especially livestock.Almost reminds me of the ethologists
who remind us of the similatities of chimps and gorillas to us humans and her
anaysis of the treatment of livestock as a model for therapy.
To me autism is a form of adjustment. The comparison to animals points out the
significant role the sensory motor phase plays inunderstanding this often
neglected phase of human cognitive development. In some sense we have become too
ideationally cerebraized that we forget the role of sensory systems.
Undoubtedly her emphasis on visual learning
ironically points out how visualization models
are much more stimulus effective (although not
necessarily of cognitive depth) certainly has implications for learning styles.
