I think that what is coming to be called "twitter backchannel" is become quite 
common, especially at conferences. It allows attendees to become engaged in the 
presentation while it is going on. I like the idea.  In fact, at some 
conferences there is an ongoing twitter backchannel like this going on behind 
the presenter on a separate screen.

This is also somewhat like what Sue Frantz has been doing with her online chat 
over the book on undergraduate education in psychology.
