This is just it: All our classrooms have both types! Usually, either a
white or black on the main wall, and then the other type on the side
walls. And both types get used pretty much evenly.

In my polling of faculty so far, I also get very opposite views (similar
to the poll that Jim sent us).

I guess I am down to needing the research. If anyone is aware of good
research on the learning outcomes linked to the usage of either type, as
well as the actual health issues, that would be great!

Otherwise I will dig in myself and let you know what I find...

Cheers.

JM

I am with Nancy on this issue: Chalk boards should be used in
classrooms.

We had a nice white board installed in one of our classrooms and
it was a disaster. First, faculty never capped pens tightly and
the pens would be dried up and useless within 24 hours of first
use. We went through a lots of pens. Faculty were then required
to carry and use a personal set of markers but some faculty
couldn't discriminate between erasable and permanent markers so
there were ghostly remnants of previous lectures on the board.
Finally, I write on the board alot. The color saturation would
decrease over the course of the lecture and I would need to keep
switching pens.

Try this test. Put a chalk board and a white board in the same
room and see which gets the most use.

Ken
