I struggled mightily with PEAK and never did get it. I am not a complete
computer moron having completed a course in JAVA and understanding the
underlying programming language. I found zero support from the folks at
psychmate. Maybe that was just my experience and things have changed; this was
a few years ago.

I've been using PsychMate for a while. It's $20 for the students (our classes
are small enough that the department picks that up), and it has PEAK -- an
experiment generator. The software for generating experiments is not easy, but
once you know it, you can concentrate on letting the students decide what the
experiment will be, and then you can code it up pretty easily.

It's not my favorite piece of software, but it works. I use it in methods and
cognitive, and a little in sensation & perception.
