I am guessing this is happening with your Mac users who are using Parallels or
Fusion to then run Windows in PC emulation. That slows down the system a lot
(that is how I run SPSS, also).

So, I see the question marks occasionally. What it means is this: SPSS knows
that there is data there, but is lagging behind in showing it, so it doesn't
know what number to put there. Left to sit there a few moments and the data
will show up. Patience is the key to running SPSS in Windows in an emulation
system on Macs.

To speed things up for me I do a restart of my Mac before I go into Windows if
I know I'll be working in the emulation environment for a while. I also make
sure I don't run any additional programs besides the emulator and the programs
that are running on it. That tends to allow the machine and emulation system to
maximize resources and meaningfully increase speed.

All modern (last 3 years or so) Macs can boot directly into Windows (if the
computer has been set up with a separate Windows partition on the hard disk).
When you set up the Mac that way, it runs Windows as quickly as any non-Mac.

I hope that all helps.

Subject: [tips] Research Data Question

Hi all,

I have my Research Methods students doing their first SPSS assignments and as
usual it has been truly a nightmare. :) The students that are working on MACs
are having a horrible time. They have to open virtual windows and other stuff
(I'm a PC gal and so I am clueless). I understand SPSS and have been teaching
Methods with SPSS for about 5 years now. My question though is, what does it
mean when they set up there data table and then when they try and enter data
all they are getting is columns of question marks? This seems to be happening
a lot.

Thanks for any help you can provide,
Nina
