Gary,

I've got a couple iphone apps in the Apple app store. I agree that it's disheartening to see what kinds of mobile "apps" come up when you look in app stores under a search term like "psychology". Typically you get a lot of "positive thinking" type of apps. However, I have found some good apps. In fact, in a recent video episode of my podcast I show some apps that I think are tightly related to some major fields in psychology and which are credible. Some of these apps are (put the titles into the search field in iTunes):

3D Brain (very cool brain that you can manipulate with your fingers)
Popplet (graphic organizer)
iCounselor (quite credible psych-educational apps on various disorders)
CBT Referee (very good app which shows how cognitive behavioral therapy works)
TraxItAll (app which shows how to use goal setting theory in your life)
BrainNmonX (my app which helps students use mnemonics to memorize the parts of the brain)

Here is the link to my episode in which I show how these apps work:

There are indeed lots more that could be done to bring more credibility and usefulness to mobile psychology-related apps.

Has anyone worked/consulted for iphone or other software app developers? I would think that psychologists could offer a lot of new ideas for possible games and apps for smartphones or the new note-pads. Of course we could offer a lot of new apps dealing with brain-strengthening exercises to reduce cognitive decline ;-) Well, we could probably develop a lot of other ideas too such as apps on critical thinking and evaluating risk, understanding probability, and general psych apps exploring the difference between fascinating research findings in psych and popular myths/misconceptions, etc. Or an app on how to choose and assess therapists? Or an app to do some walk-around social psych observations and examine some social psych principles in action? The psych apps I've seen so far for smartphones and such have been borrrring and not very interactive. Any tipsters have experience in this area? I suppose it shows that I am in the last week of classes and looking forward to spring/ summer? Gary
