Hi Rick-

There was a study presented at one of the Banff confernces on Behaviour Mod. in
the mid seventies that spoke to this issue. Unfortunately, I can't find it in
my boxes of old office stuff. However, the gist of the paper was that the best
predictor of crime (especially violent crime) was not income per se, but the
disparity of income between parents and young-adult children. During periods of
either general wealth or poverty violent crime was fairly low. However, during
periods when Mom & Dad had plenty of money but the kids couldn't get a job
flipping burgers at McDs violent crime went up. This is not to suggest that
Chris's point about demographics should be ignored. I think that it is an
important factor as well. I would like to see a model which incorporated both
factors. I think that both show that the simplistic notion that jobs = low
crime is just that; simplistic.
