it's called a CAPTCHA, a remarkably clever technique to foil machines abusing the Internet. You can read all about it at Wikipedia. You might miss in the Wikipedia entry a brief mention of a version called reCAPTCHA, which is an equally clever application of the technique to transcribe old and difficult-to-read text to digital.
