it's called a CAPTCHA, a remarkably clever technique to foil
machines abusing the Internet. You can read all about it at
Wikipedia.

You might miss in the Wikipedia entry a brief mention of a
version called reCAPTCHA, which is an equally clever
application of the technique to transcribe old and difficult-to-read
text to digital. Wikipedia has a separate entry for reCAPTCHA,
or you might try this: http://tinyurl.com/dxxydp
