I think that everyone has had some sort of interesting story about page length,
and should consider that when assigning papers. My favorite is in regard to my
friend, mentor, and Psychology professor who did take me under his wing, Bob
Toal, who taught Abnormal and Community Psych among other courses. In the
first class that I had him, he stated clearly that the paper should be now
fewer than 4 pages and no more than 6 pages, which included everything. When
we handed in the papers on the day due, he started picking them up and counting
pages. Any papers that were fewer than 3 pages were tossed into the trash.
Any that exceeded 6 pages had the excess pages torn off and tossed into the
trash.
I've never been quite that brash, but thought that it was a good lesson for the
class to learn. He allowed those whose papers had been trashed or truncated to
redo the assignment with a relatively small penalty. He never had a problem
with paper length after that.
My first paper was nearly exactly 6 pages. Maybe that's why we got along so
well.
