Dear Tipsters,

Re: Length

Why not specify length in terms of words? That way you avoid issues of font
shape and size and even line spacing.

For your information, my standard essay in most courses asks for 2000 to 2500
words from beginning of introduction to the end of the discussio. And I ask for
the this word count on the title page.

Sincerely,

Stuart

I noticed that some people objected to your page length note. They had good
reasons, because the meaning of that note on assignments does vary from
professor to professor.

What I put in my syllabus is a page range for each assignment: "3 to 5 body
pages, plus title page and reference list, 5 to 7 pages total." In class when
discussing the syllabus (and again when the paper is nearing due date) I
explain what that means, "People vary in writing style, some are concise, some
are wordy. I grade content, do you address the points that the assignment asks
you to address and otherwise meet the grading criteria. My experience suggests
that it would be rare in the extreme for a student to meet those criteria in
less than 3 pages, and student taking more than 5 pages probably needs to do
some editing for length, though on rare occasion shorter and longer papers get
good grades."

My first book, "Miss Conduct's Mind Over Manners," is available now wherever
books are sold! (Or if not, ask the bookseller to order more. Politely!)

With the beginning of a new semester, and for many of our students the
beginning of their college career, it's time to trot out this wonderful piece
that my students love.

"Miss Conduct" is a column in Sunday's Boston Globe Magazine. (And the author
also just happens to be our own Robin Abrahams!)

She had this on her blog, and I always post it for my students.
