I think the problem is actually a learning vs. performance one and not about 
transfer of learning.  To suggest that practice on the stroop test improves 
"memory" and not just performance on the stroop test requires other measures of 
"memory".  Neither the stroop test nor general performance on life skills are 
adequate tests of "memory", although they may be interesting and important in 
their own right.
