This case has been tossed around quite a bit of late. From what I have read in
multiple sources either way both men will die of their illness; this new drug
will only prolong the one person's life for a limited time frame (read the
article closely, it only slows the tumor's growth but does not provide a cure)
and is considered to be a stepping stone towards a drug that might provide a
longer remission/cure (??).

I'm not sure if this would have made the rounds had it not been for the
"cousins" human interest element; many such studies have been going on for
decades. We've been blissfully unaware of the successes and failures.

The real tragedy is such an illness taking people at such a young age :(

Don't they do sequential statistical analysis on such large scale studies? That
is, aren't they obligated by ethics to analyze the data every few months and if
unambiguous evidence of efficacy is developed immediately switch all control
participants to the effective treatment?

When does random assignment of subjects to groups receiving different
treatments for cancer become unethical and inhumane? This article in the NYT's
certainly provokes such consideration.
