I prefer non-test Evaluations that are still objective assessments of knowledge or skills. It is harder to justify subjective assessments. In my Gen. Psych class, after coverage of the research methods chapter, I give a Journal Report handout and they are asked to find a Psych journal and identify hypothesis, basic method, and an operational measure. I also use this for an extra credit option. In a prep class for psych majors here, I give what I call a library challenge assignment, where they have one week to learn about an assigned topic and find at least three primary sources (must be psych journals) on their topic, and summarize all in short report that must conform to APA format (they get time to expand and correct this later).
