I have had a few other variations on the same theme. I allowed a student to take an incomplete grade in a class last semester and then received this request, followed by my response:
Student to me: "Dr. Froman, May I ask, can you grade all of it now and tell me what grade I'd get. If the errors [on the paper] would be the difference between like an A and an A-, or a B+ and an A-, for instance, then I'd be happy to make the necessary changes. When I get back, then we could correct the necessary changes for it to be the best paper it can be." Me to student: "Incomplete grades are only designed to provide students with grace to complete assignments they didn't have time to complete before grades were due. They can't be used to provide an advantage over other students by allowing assignments to be partially graded and then further revised for a higher grade. I build enough extra credit and dropped grades into the system so that no one barely misses a higher grade that they would have deserved." The student seemed to appreciate this response.
