We have a saying: "When the rapture comes, we get all their stuff." (Only the
real one doesn't use "stuff," but rather a term probably not appropriate here.)

Here's what I know: I was visiting with my 88-year-old mother, who has been
reading Revelations lately, and she asked if I put any stock in the May 21st
prediction. I knew nothing about it, but told her most predictions leave me
pretty cold. So I Googled it and it seems that a number of people--I'm not sure
how to spell wacko--believe that the rapture will occur on May 21, and that
Armageddon will follow with the destruction complete in October. I only know
what I learned through Google. Now, if I wake up on May 21 and there is nobody
left, I'll know I was wrong.

Now, I admit that there are certain current events that I follow but
there are others that I avoid (e.g., I've never seen an episode of
"American Idol" or reality shows [unless forced to by someone I
was with who watched one like "Mob Wives"] or the series "Lost"
and so on). I have not been following the end of the world stuff
which explains why I was somewhat bewildered by Alan Kraut's
email this morning to APS members about the 2011 APS meeting
being the last meeting ever. But APS appears to be making an offer
to its members to attend this meeting that they can't refuse. Quoting
the email:

|Come to the 23rd Annual APS Convention May 26-29, in Washington
|DC. Register in advance at our oh-so-reasonable rates. And if the
|world ends anytime between May 21 and the end of the Convention on
|May 29, we will refund EVERY PENNY you spent. No questions
|asked -- registration, airline ticket, all local transportation, all hotel
|costs (INCLUDING MINI-BAR CHARGES), a per diem of $55 a
|day (the going rate), plus a couple of happy hour beers. All on us.
|How can you beat it? You can't.

It's too late to be an April's Fool joke but clearly some folks are
expecting the end of the world as we know it though I don't know
why. Does it have something do with Mayan Prophecy? Did
Nostrodamus predict it? Was there some End Times event that I
missed? Did someone see the image of the antichrist in a grilled
cheese sandwich? Alan Kraut mentions the End of World As We
Know It (EWOWKI!) is supposed to occur between May 21
and October 21. So, what's backstory to this?
