The recent post re hippocampus and religion is nothing new.Julian Jaynes had
written a work on the development of consciousness and the breakdown of the
bicameral mind.Jaynes declared himself a psycho-archaeologist and proposed the
idea that religion evolved at the same time the left side of the brain became
fully functional.
If I recall correctly he stated that early humans got confused
about the sounds and voices emanating from within but these became
externalized to an outside source, namely God.
Interestingly enough the contemplative catholic orders like the Trappist
monks, the Benedictines to some extent, the Carthusans, and the hermits take an
extra vow of silence and believe that it is in the medium of silence that God
speaks.Even the scriptures make reference to" Be still and know that I am God"
There could be a case for hippocampus atrophy in comparingthe contemplative
monastic orders and other forms of religious expressions, but this is for a
future post.
