And a second glance at the press release showed that I missed the authors claim
that the 'other driver's' actions must be a factor, so my point was already in
the press release.

It appears that most of the news reports of this study is based on
a press release put out by the University of Michigan where the
research was done. The press release can be read here:
http://ns.umich.edu/htdocs/releases/story.php?id=8432

However, none of sources appear to actually provide a reference
to the study. Using my magical psychic powers (and scholar.google.com),
I believe that this is the journal article that serves as the basis for
the press release and the news stories; see:
http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/tandf/gcpi2/2011/00000012/00000003/art00006
(Note: it was published on 06/01/2011).

It only costs $55.49 (plus tax) to buy a copy of the article and
probably is a bargain at twice the price. If your institution subscribes
to Taylor & Francis Online, you might be able to get a copy for
free.
