Joan: I tend to concur with your post.I have developped the tendency to tell some folks that novel experiences help the brain make new connections and that the brain is stimulated by surprising experiences. As a mobile disc jockey,I rarely play originals of songs, but I would play various versions ( jazz ,reggae, country, and other formats) and my audience is really surprised and begin to enquire the alternate versions. Some people I find are really stuck on originals.Whereas cognitive processes may affect the chemistry of te brain,we still have to delineate the critical variables.Humor may make us smile and laugh,I suspect, however, the critical variable here is the element of surprise.I also suspect that ideas that are scientifically incorrect impact brain processes to a greater extent than ideas that are scientifically correct. Btw,if one wants to get out of a temporary depressive episode, let me recommend attending an African-American church service on Sundays.
