Hi there from health(switzer)land!
The latest episode of "Specimen" (a vulgarization science-show airing in
French-speaking Switzerland) was dedicated to food, health and behavior.
One of the families interviewed had 2 children, one suffering from GERD
(gastro-esophageal reflux disease), the other was diagnosed with ADHD. After a
6-year battle with theses affections and their secondary effects, they turned
to a English practician who had them change their diet and cut on sugar,
lactose, gluten and cereals and of course color-additives...
After 3 months, their first child had no gastro-intestinal troubles anymore,
and the 2nd didn't show any more signs of ADHD; when asked how he felt after
eating a bar of chocolate, the boy answered he was feeling more aggressive
towards his mother...
Of course, one would think of a nocebo effect, as well as uncontrolled
variables (such as the change of attitude of the parents, or the fact that the
elder daughter didn't need so much attention due to digestive problems), not to
speak of self-fulfilling prophecy (the shared belief that if they changed their
diet everything would run better...)
Yet two questions:
- has anyone probed the area of brain-food-behavior interaction?
- Is neuro-immunology a recognized specialization overseas?
Thanks for your insights
