Or because they think that they're doing research and that there's nothing wrong with it. They may have been getting away with it throughout their secondary education. In my lab course where I required papers, a included a handout specifying what plagiarism was and was not. Of course, I still got one paper handed in with the original author's name in the upper right hand corner of each page (I kid you not)!
