A somewhat disturbing article in the NY Times details how Big Pharma is being encouraged to conduct drug trials in Russia where the population appears more than willing to participate because in many instances it is the only opportunity they will have to get access to medical care. I think this situation can be used as an example of subtle coercion to participate when non-participation provides a potentially worse outcome.
