I am writing because my school is looking to change some of the procedures involving our online and self-paced courses.
In particular, apparently passed in 2008 are accreditation guidelines that call for verification of the identity of our online students. Has anyone else had to deal with this? My school is proposing using a service called ProctorU (http://proctoru.com/) which is a fee-based system for students, and I would really like to know if there are other services or ways to work around this problem. (Of course, I don't actually verify that the students in my face-to-face class are actually who they say they are, but that is beside the point I guess.) Secondly, the DE department is suggesting the use of SmarterMeasure (http://www.smartermeasure.com/) which would "diagnose students' preparedness for an online course." Apparently, this wouldn't screen students out, but would "enable [our school] to provide remedial interventions" as needed. Have any of you used something like this? I'm thinking that if this isn't actually a prerequisite for the course it will be fairly useless, but I could be wrong I suppose. Thanks in advance for any feedback. Christine L.
