Hi

I too use concept or cognitive maps a lot. For example, I include a cognitive
map at the start of powerpoint shows and jump back to it at important points
using hyperlinks. In a paper with Allan Paivio on dual coding theory and
education, I reviewed some of the relevant literature under the topic of
associative structures. It is scattered a bit throughout the paper, which can
be found at

Very briefly, the use of such structures is consistent with much research on
memory and related theories (e.g., importance of organization and schemas), as
well as much educational research on use of such structures by students and
professors. Research shows, for example, that students who have cognitive
structures similar to those of an instructor tend to do better in the course,
although I suspect some of the effect is really little / no structure versus
some structure.

My only ambivalence about explicitly presenting such maps is that the students
then do not get an opportunity to practice making them. I remember spending
much time as an undergraduate trying to summarize entire courses in this
manner. Who knows what the impact of that experience was?

Take care
Jim

I use concept maps a lot. I find them to be useful ways to organize my notes.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any interesting research on this topic. I
see connections to gestalt psychology (organizational principles for example)
but anyone know of some research regarding why they're effective ways to learn?
I suppose that the creation of a "mindmap" (or whatever you want to call them)
requires some active thinking on the learner's part. Other ideas/research
anyone have handy?

Thanks,

Michael
