Ah, TIPSTER minds think alike! I just sent off the possibility of the Phi 
coefficient effect size which can easily be done from the 25 chi squares of the 
McNemar test. phi = square root (chi-square/N). But there are lots of other 
effect sizes that can follow the t or F tests. I believe you can get to phi by 
dummy coding each nominal variable as 0,1 and running it through the Pearson r 
formula. mmmm N based on just the two key McNemar cells???

I think step 1 would still be an answer to the question "Was the change large 
enough to be considered "real" or statistically reliable." 


Step 2 would be to ask which of the statistically reliable changes were largest 
. . . perhaps an estimate of effect size and rank ordering of the questions. 
Outside of Cohen and others categories of effect sizes as small, medium, or 
large, is there any quantitative method for comparing the relative sizes of 
effects?
