Rob- I'd agree - the only exception might be if a publisher has given you specific guidelines re: who can or cannot get reprints. I haven't heard of having to provide University affiliation as a criteria for receiving reprints. I would question his or her assumption that your data are publicly funded unless you are on a government grant, but we do, as scientists, operate within a system where our work is not just reviewable by those within some specific cadre. I think when we publish something we are establishing a certain openness to review of the work. Just my two cents. Tim
