There are two research studies that were just published in the journal
"Current Biology" that indicate that inhabitants of Easter Island
mated with Native Americans/American Indians. The conundrum
arises from whether the Easter Islanders came to South America
and then brought some of them back to Easter Island or did the
South Americans come to Easter Island. And that's just the first
article. The second article is concerned with two ancient human
skulls found in Brazil, among the Botocudo people (they wear
large disks in their lips and ears) who are genetically Polynesian
(no Native American genes). There is an article on the
Christian Science Monitor website that reviews both studies and

Considering that the traveling is estimated to have occurred sometime
between 1300-1500, it is an amazing feat of seafaring.
